This company caught my attention because its products were unique to me. I had never tried a cleanser made from grass-fed tallow before, so I had to get my hands on a jar! Based on the oil-cleansing method where like attracts like, the natural oils in the Grapefruit Lavender Cleanser dissolve makeup, dirt, and excess oil. The cleanser is made with grass-fed tallow, cold-pressed castor seed oil, and therapeutic grade organic essential oils and is all whipped up to resemble a white fluffy butter.
Grass-fed tallow is an anti-oxidant rich golden oil obtained from holistic, ethical, and sustainable farming practices in Saskatchewan. The mother and daughter mastermind team behind Sweet Living Co. follow the sacred traditions of their ancestors who appreciated all their resources and use grass-fed tallow for several of their products making use of the part of the animal that would otherwise be wasted. The fatty tissue of grass-fed cows is slowly heated and the result is a clean and vitamin-rich oil which resembles the fatty acid profile to human skin.
For me, ethical and sustainable farming makes sense as does using every part of the animal. I am a meat eater who appreciates knowing where my food comes from, how it’s raised and the way it gets to my table. Although, I understand that a lot of consumers today are looking for products that are plant-based and free of animal-based ingredients, it is important to understand that this type of farming and use of animal resources has existed for hundreds of years. Women in the cold northern areas of the Canadian prairies did not have coconut or olive oil at their disposal like our ancestors who came from warmer areas of the world – tallow was used to moisturize skin and for therapeutic uses. A lot of cosmetic companies use tallow in their products, for example lipsticks, but they like to keep it on the down low because current trends promote plant-based skincare and makeup. The sad thing is that a few of these plant-based products actually contain the ingredients our skin needs. A single ingredient such as grass-fed tallow is a superfood for our skin because it’s rich in antioxidants as well as saturated and monosaturated fats. My philosophy is the less ingredients the better, so try to choose products with a few ingredients that actually make a difference on your skin. A lot of products are loaded with fillers, and although plant-based, might not necessarily do anything for your skin. If you are a lover of plant-based products, check out my review on Helena Lane.
When you apply the Grapefruit and Lavender Cleanser to your skin, it instantly melts into a rich oil removing all traces of makeup. The only drawback is the removal of eye makeup since the cleanser is not recommended for the eye area. However, this product makes a great candidate for the double-cleansing method – an oil cleanser first to remove makeup and excess sebum followed by a second cleanser which washes away water-based substances such as old skin cells, perspiration, and bacteria. I removed my eye makeup with a gentle eye makeup remover before using the Grapefruit and Lavender cleanser. I really loved the feeling of the product while I worked it on my skin and the softness and plumpness after I removed it with a warm facecloth. My face looked noticeably rested the next morning although I had not gotten more sleep than usual.
Although the Grapefruit and Lavender cleanser is not vegan, Sweet Living Co. makes various vegan serums like the Rosehip and Frankincense Facial Elixir – a cold-pressed combination of apricot kernel, camellia seed, rosehip and evening primrose oils which provide essential fatty acids to the skin and work against aging. It’s infused with therapeutic grade essential oils of frankincense, carrot seed, lavender and geranium. I use it after cleansing at night and gently press it onto my damp skin after cleansing. The texture and aroma are divine! My skin feels very hydrated and I don’t feel that I have to apply a separate moisturizer. I have also noticed that this elixir and the potent content of frankincense have helped fade my sun spots from my forehead and brighten my complexion. Just apply it at night and let it do its work. You’ll be very pleased with the visible results on your skin the next morning.
Vitamin C serums are very popular for anyone looking to reap the anti-aging benefits of this vitamin. However, various forms of Vitamin C like L-Ascorbic Acid (LAA) are not stable, can cause skin irritations and cost an arm and a leg. Enter the Pumpkin and Seaberry Ultra Elixir! This serum is the perfect alternative to the expensive, non-stable forms of vitamin C. Made with naturally-occurring vitamins and essential fatty acids, it absorbs quickly promoting a hydrated glowing complexion. Unrefined, cold-pressed Alberta Seaberry oil (aka Seabuckthorn) contains a concentrated dose of anti-aging Vitamin C that’s 12 times higher than that of an orange. It also contains over 190 nutrients and phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, fibre and protein making it a potent Superfood! Seaberry oil contains more Vitamin E than any other known plant at this time as well as beta-carotene and Omegas 3, 6, and 9. It promotes skin elasticity, regeneration and it’s excellent for in reducing swelling and redness associated with eczema, rosacea and psoriasis. The light scents of neroli, frankincense and carrot seed in this beautiful serum are pure bliss.
