There are many reasons why you use grass-fed tallow on your skin. My youngest son struggled with severe eczema for years and I tried it all including grass-fed tallow. It made a wonderful moisturizer after bath time and deeply nourished his skin. Grass-fed tallow is amazing for many skin uses including eczema, psoriasis, burns, etc. It also makes a wonderful moisturizer for dry skin. In the video below, I share my thoughts about why you should use tallow on your skin.
What is tallow?
Grass-fed tallow (GF tallow) is a type of fat that comes from the rendered (melted and purified) suet of grass-fed animals, typically cattle. Suet is the fatty tissue that surrounds the kidneys and other organs. Farmers collect GF tallow from animals that have been exclusively or primarily fed a diet of grass, as opposed to grains or other supplemental feeds. Grass-fed tallow is valued for its composition of healthy fats, including a good balance of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats. It contains fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin K2 and is a source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which has been associated with potential health benefits. Some people use GF tallow in cooking and skincare products due to its high smoke point and moisturizing properties.
What are the benefits of grass-fed tallow?
It’s important to note that the nutritional composition of tallow can be influenced by the diet of the animals, so GF tallow is often considered a healthier option compared to tallow from conventionally raised animals fed a diet primarily consisting of grains. You really need to do your research before you shop. The brands I support in my shop are Two of Earth Tallow Balm from Ontario and Eternal Tallow from Manitoba. Both brands make their products from grass-fed cattle. If you’re going to try it for your skin, these are the benefits:
- Moisturization: Tallow is rich in fatty acids, which can help moisturize the skin. It closely resembles the structure of human skin lipids, making it an effective natural moisturizer. It helps to hydrate the skin, preventing dryness and flakiness.
- Nutrient Content: GF tallow contains fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K. These vitamins play essential roles in skin health, promoting cell regeneration, and providing antioxidant protection.
- Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Tallow contains anti-inflammatory compounds, which may help soothe irritated or inflamed skin. This can be beneficial for individuals with conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
- Compatibility with Skin Lipids: The fatty acid profile of tallow is similar to the natural lipids found in human skin. This makes it a compatible option for various skin types, potentially reducing the risk of skin irritation.
- Protection Against Environmental Damage: The fats in tallow create a barrier on the skin, helping to protect it from environmental factors such as harsh weather conditions, pollutants, and UV radiation.
- No Harsh Chemicals: Pure, grass-fed tallow doesn’t contain additives or harsh chemicals that are sometimes found in commercial skincare products. This makes it a natural and potentially gentler option for those with sensitive skin.
Is grass-fed tallow holistic skincare?
Interestingly, grass-fed tallow is a holistic skincare option because it aligns with principles of natural, simple, and sustainable skincare. In recent years, the p0pularity of these ingredients has increased as many of us are seeking more natural ways of living. Here are some reasons why tallow fits the holistic approach:
- Natural Ingredients: Grass-fed tallow is a minimally processed, natural substance derived from the fat of grass-fed animals. It typically does not contain synthetic additives, preservatives, or harsh chemicals that are often found in some commercial skincare products.
- Biocompatibility: Tallow has a fatty acid profile that is similar to the lipids found in human skin. Its biocompatibility makes it an attractive option for holistic skincare, as it is thought to work in harmony with the skin’s natural structure and function.
- Nutrient-Rich: Grass-fed tallow contains fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), which are known for their skin-nourishing properties. These vitamins play a crucial role in maintaining your skin’s health and may contribute to a holistic approach to skincare.
- Sustainability: The use of grass-fed tallow aligns with sustainability practices in agriculture. Animals raised on grass are often considered to have a smaller environmental footprint compared to those raised on conventional feedlots.
- No Animal Testing: Most small farms and skincare companies produce grass-fed tallow products ethically and sustainably and do not engage in animal testing. This aligns with holistic principles that promote cruelty-free and environmentally conscious practices.
- Minimalist Approach: Holistic skincare often embraces a minimalist approach, avoiding unnecessary and potentially harmful ingredients. Grass-fed tallow is a simple and straightforward ingredient, making it appealing to those who prefer a less complex skincare routine.
How I use it in my skincare regimen
A tallow balm can be a multi-purpose skincare product that’s perfect for all minimalists out there. Yes, it’s fantastic at treating skin ailments like eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, rough patches and more. Simply apply on clean skin and watch the product perform miracles. However as a minimalist myself, I love multi-purpose products in skincare and also makeup. Oil cleansing has always been one of the skincare rituals I give my skin because it cleanses and nourishes the skin simultaneously. You can use a tallow balm as an oil cleanser to remove excess oil, dirt and makeup. You can also use it as a facial moisturizer. I even have a tallow balm in my shop with zinc oxide, which offers sun protection. Check out this YouTube short to see how beautifully it removes makeup!
Do your research before you use it!
Lastly, it’s important to note that individual skin reactions can vary. While many people find benefits in using grass-fed tallow, it may not be suitable for everyone. As with any skincare product, it’s advisable to perform a patch test before widespread use and consult with a dermatologist if you have specific skin concerns or conditions. The effectiveness of any skincare product may depend on factors such as your overall skincare routine, diet, and individual skin characteristics. My favourite way of using it as an oil cleanser!
Final Thoughts on Tallow Balms
Additionally, many tallow products contain essential oils which might not be right for you and your family. That said, my shop carries tallow balms without any essential oils. As with all skincare, do your own research and contact the maker with any questions before purchasing. If you want to eliminate some products and ingredients from your skincare regimen, a tallow balm can definitely be a multi-purpose product.
