The Best Green Tips for Curly Hair

When it comes to caring for curly hair, it can be difficult to find products that cooperate with your curls. It can be especially difficult to find great, green brands that you feel safe using. I have found some products that I want to share with you, and because I love them they’re available in my shop. Finding a hairstylist that specializes in textured hair to help you in your hair journey is so helpful, because not all products or methods work for everyone. Today, I want to share the best green tips for curly hair to set you on the right path.

Effective Cleansing and Conditioning

Your shampoo and conditioner is the foundation for great looking hair. Think of it as the base for your styling products to make sure your hair and scalp is prepared to look its best.

Tips for Shampooing Curly Hair:

So for starters, I love using Innersense’s Hydrating Cream Hairbath. Innersense is a salon quality brand that uses only the best and cleanest ingredients. It was formulated to be wonderful for all hair types but especially for those with curly hair. The hairbath effectively cleans my scalp without drying my hair out. It is a miracle for my thick hair and many of my clients love it as well. When I am cleansing, I focus on my scalp and root area as this hair type is always easy to dry out when cleansing your lengths. You want to be gentle yet thorough, and you can achieve this by shampooing twice so as to get rid of build-up without creating frizz.

Deep Hydrating Hair Ceremony

If you find your scalp is feeling congested, Innersense has a scalp scrub that gets rid of additional buildup and dandruff. You use this before shampooing and on wet hair.

If your scalp is dry, or if you are experiencing hair loss and thinning, Amazing Hair Saviour’s hair oil is a fantastic option. This oil can be used before shampooing on your ends to lock in existing moisture. You can also apply directly to your scalp and massage in to encourage growth. I love applying the oil all over before I go to bed, and wash in the morning to really get the full benefit.

How to Condition Curly Hair:

For my conditioner, I use the Innersense Hydrating Cream Conditioner. It is so nourishing for my hair, but it doesn’t weigh it down. If your hair feels like it is in a ‘funk’, a hydrating mask or a detoxifying mask are great for an extra boost of love. When applying this conditioner, your hair needs to be soaking wet to really ‘squish’ the moisture back into your hair. In the curl world this is called ‘squish to condish’! After this you should detangle with your fingers or a brush made for detangling. Continue to squish your curls upwards while rinsing to encourage your curls to form and hold.

Product Selection for Fine and Coloured Curly Hair

All of Innersense’s products are safe for coloured hair. If you are looking for extra colour protection, you can use the Color Awakening Hairbath and Color Radiance Daily Conditioner. If you have fine and easily weighed down hair you can try the Pure Harmony Hairbath and Pure Inspiration Daily Conditioner.

Tips for Styling Curly Hair

Product Selection

So styling your hair is a personal choice, and the products I would recommend depend on the look you want and on your hair type. I love when my hair has lots of volume and definition so I often reach for a strong hold gel. If your hair needs a bit more moisture or definition, a leave-in conditioner or a curl cream work really great. I just want to stress that this is the part of having curly hair that requires experimentation and patience. What works for me might not work for you. Other options for styling you might like is foam or lotion for volume, and a spray or creme for texture.

Application Tips

In terms of styling tips, leaving your hair soaking wet while adding in products is my number one tip for getting great curl definition and locking in moisture. I will apply my product upside down using my palms and then rake through to distribute. I then scrunch/squish my hair upwards to form the curl. These days my hair is loving Innersense’s ‘I Create Hold’ Gel. I also cannot rave more about the citrus scent of the gel. After this I remove the excess water with a microfiber towel and let my hair air dry. Never use a normal cotton towel because it will cause damage and frizz. If it is cold outside, I will diffuse my roots on a low setting. Heat is damaging for hair so I recommend staying away from using heat, especially on healing curls. If you must use heat, use a protectant to minimize damage.

Extra Tips

After your hair is completely dry, you can use a hair oil to scrunch out the gel cast. I also like to gently separate the curl clumps for extra volume. If your scalp is oily and your roots look greasy but you want to extend your wash day, a dry shampoo is great. If you have some curls that need a little help, you can use a finishing spray on wet or dry hair to give a little refresh with hold.
